Questionnaire Planning

I have thought of a range of questions to ask in my questionnaire. These questions will help me to understand what my target audience would like to see in a Hip Hop magazine, for example what features. Here is a list of some questions i have thought of.

• What Gender are you
• What age are you
• Are you a fan of Hip Hop
• How often do you buy music magazines
• What features would you like to see in a Hip Hop magazine
• Do you like simple or busy front covers, what's more appealing

• In your opinion what is a reasonable price to buy a magazine

These are some ideas of some questions I will include as well as many others. By creating this questionnaire I will be able to gain results and produce my audience research, as well as understand what appeals my target audience of 15-25 year olds and how i can create a magazine to fit their needs, for it to be
successful.

Audience Theory

This is my research into audience theories.

Codes and Conventions

From the previous research i have conducted, I have began to understand some obvious codes and conventions that appear in Hip Hop magazines. Firstly in terms of the front cover, when looking at the colour schemes uses, i found that generally alot of the same colours are used for example in the images above you can see the main colours used for typeface are reds and whites against a neutral background. This seems to be conventional of this genre of magazines to easily attract the audience in simple ways allowing colours to contrast against each other. Another factor of the front covers that is conventional of my chosen genre is the main image. There is only one image used on the front cover and this is the main image. The hooks on the side do not include images, only text and this is something i have seen in all Hip Hop magazines i have analysed. I believe that this convention is used for the main attraction for the audience and the celebrities on the front cover are so well known that them alone will attract the magazines target audience This can also be said for many magazines, however a different genre such as rock would have many images on the left third to help attract their audience.

In terms of the contents page, the magazines I have analysed and previously looked at have different contents pages and layouts which seem to break any stereotypical Hip Hop conventions. However some similarities included colours. From the two contents pages i have looked at in previous research, neural colours were used in the background with white and/or black text, this could have been done to keep it simple, and with the contract of colours still allowing it to be effective and eye catching.

When looking at double page spreads in my chosen genre I found only a limited number of images, mainly one which was the main image and either the image was stretched along the double page, on one side or the majority was on one side of the page. Again the layout is very simple, however the image itself was creative. Using different misรจ en scene and poses to create an effective picture. Conventional of what I believe is included in this genre, simple text is used, but again creativity is used for the masthead which puts a little twist on the page.

Making the cover

This post represents my print screens whilst in the process of making my magazing cover. The first print screen shows a simple layout, showing the positioning of the background image, mast head and skyline. The next print screen shows the progression of my cover with kickers and other features taing its place. The following two print screen shows how i changed the colour of my text from black to red. I wanted to change the text colour for it to stand out. If i had all the text the same colour it would not be eye catching. The final print screen shows my final cover.
